Former elementary and middle school teachers, Tom and Gayle Joliet saw the potential to involve children in environmental causes such as saving the Garden Park and the ocean environment by producing a colorfully illustrated children’s book.  Together they created the Garden Elf topiary that inspired the book “Alani and the Giant Kelp Elf.”  

Tom and Gayle are dedicated to the South Laguna Community Garden Park and express their commitment by serving on the Garden Board and helping with every garden management need, from maintaining the slopes and borders of the Garden Park to fundraising. Tom helped found the Garden Band and is a ukulele instructor for the Ukulele Academy based at the SusiQ senior center.  Both musical groups perform at Garden events
